What is Market Cap in Crypto and Why It Matters for Indian Investors

0

Market capitalisation, commonly called market cap, is one of the most frequently referenced metrics in cryptocurrency investing. Understanding what it means and how to use it helps Indian investors make more informed decisions about which coins to invest in and how to compare them.

What is Market Cap in Crypto?

Market capitalisation in cryptocurrency is calculated as:

Market Cap = Current Price × Circulating Supply

For example, if Bitcoin is trading at ₹50,00,000 per coin and there are 19.8 million BTC in circulation:

Market Cap = ₹50,00,000 × 19,800,000 = ₹990 trillion (approximately)

Market cap gives you a sense of the total value the market has placed on a cryptocurrency, not just its individual price.

Why Market Cap Matters More Than Price

A common mistake among new investors is focusing only on price:

  • “Bitcoin costs ₹50 lakh per coin, but SHIB costs ₹0.001, SHIB has more room to grow!”

This is incorrect. Price per coin alone is meaningless. What matters is market cap.

Consider:

  • Coin A: Price ₹1, Supply 1,000,000,000 coins → Market Cap ₹100 crore
  • Coin B: Price ₹1,000, Supply 100,000 coins → Market Cap ₹10 crore

Coin B is actually smaller than Coin A, despite its higher price per coin.

For Coin A to 10x, the market cap must grow to ₹1,000 crore. For Coin B to 10x, only ₹100 crore in new demand is needed.

Crypto Market Cap Categories

Large cap (above ₹40,000 crore / ~$5 billion USD): Bitcoin, Ethereum. More established, more liquid, generally lower risk relative to smaller caps.

Mid cap (₹800 crore-₹40,000 crore / ~$100M-$5B USD): More growth potential but also higher risk. Can include established altcoins.

Small cap (below ₹800 crore / ~$100M USD): Higher potential upside but much higher risk. Many small-cap coins have failed completely.

Micro/Nano cap: Extremely speculative. Very high risk of complete loss.

Total Crypto Market Cap

The total market cap of all cryptocurrencies combined is tracked at sites like CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko. It serves as a general indicator of the overall health and size of the crypto market.

Bitcoin’s dominance (Bitcoin’s market cap as a percentage of total crypto market cap) is also watched closely. Higher Bitcoin dominance typically indicates risk-off behaviour by crypto investors.

Limitations of Market Cap

Not like traditional market cap: Traditional stock market cap has real revenue and assets behind it. Crypto market cap is purely a function of price and supply, it does not reflect revenue, utility, or fundamental value directly.

Circulating supply vs. total supply: Market cap is based on circulating supply (coins currently tradeable). Total supply includes coins that are locked, vested, or not yet released. Fully diluted market cap (FDV) = price × total supply, and can be much higher than market cap.

Low liquidity can inflate market cap: A thinly traded coin with 99% of supply locked by the team can have a high nominal market cap while its true tradeable float is small.

Market cap does not measure quality: A high market cap does not mean a project is fundamentally sound.

Frequently Asked Questions About Crypto Market Cap

Does a low-priced coin with a low market cap have more potential?

Not necessarily. Potential depends on the project’s fundamentals, technology, team, and adoption, not just price and market cap.

What is “fully diluted market cap”?

Fully diluted market cap = current price × maximum total supply. It shows what the market cap would be if all coins were in circulation today. Useful for evaluating vesting schedules and token inflation.

Is market cap a reliable measure of a coin’s value?

Market cap reflects current market sentiment and liquidity. It is not a direct measure of intrinsic value or future performance.

What is Bitcoin dominance?

Bitcoin dominance is BTC’s market cap as a percentage of the total crypto market cap. It rises when investors move to Bitcoin from altcoins (risk-off) and falls when altcoins outperform (risk-on).

How often does market cap change?

Market cap changes every time the price changes (which is continuously during trading hours). Circulating supply also changes as new coins are mined or released.

Final Thoughts

Market cap is one of the most useful tools for contextualising a cryptocurrency’s size and relative risk profile. Use it alongside other research, not in isolation, to make informed investment decisions.
